I had a thought that I should try and save you
So, I closed my eyes and went to where you were.
I saw you,
Frail, with twisted limbs.
I gently rolled you over.
I took your hand, and we went to the parlor,
Set your hair and left hoping no one noticed the run in your stockings.
We stopped somewhere along the road to nowhere,
And I asked you how you were.
A slight cry for a distant mother I never knew passed your lips
And entered my heart.
I thought it late, so I brought you back
And pulled the sheets tight and then sat for a while.
In my mind I cradled you as if you were a newborn baby.
All the while you closed your eyes, caressed my youth,
And thought that you should try and save me.
